The perinatal period is the duration of a woman’s pregnancy, childbirth, and several months postpartum. This time can be exciting and wonderful, although mental health symptoms can present for both mothers and fathers. Symptoms can vary from sadness, isolation, panic, racing thoughts, insomnia, and trauma. Some of these symptoms can be a normal part of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting, but when these symptoms become impactful for the individual or family, it can raise concern. Having a safe and supportive relationship with your therapist can help you overcome these challenges, learn ways of coping, and allow for a healthy relationship with your child.
